A budget line for AI training needs two figures: what the provider charges, and what the hours cost while your people learn. Every price here was read on the provider's own page on 1 October 2026 and is shown as displayed. "No VAT wording" means the page said neither "inc VAT" nor "+ VAT".
Price is one way to compare providers; our guide to choosing a data and AI training provider weighs format and delivery as well.
The price ladder
Six rungs: five in rising order of price, then the publicly funded routes, each opening with a typical figure for anyone who would rather skip the tables.
Free
Typically £0 a head, plus the working time. AI Skills Boost courses are built by industry partners, backed by Skills England and DSIT, and take from 20 minutes to a day. When DSIT announced the programme's expansion in January 2026, it said every UK adult was eligible and that completing selected courses would earn a government-backed virtual AI foundations badge.
| Provider and product | Length | Price as displayed |
|---|---|---|
| AI Skills Boost | 20 minutes to a day | Free |
| DataCamp Basic | Self-paced, limited access | Free |
Self-paced, per seat
Typically from about £50 for a single bitesize course to just under £300 a person for a year's subscription.
| Provider and product | Length | Price as displayed |
|---|---|---|
| CIPD, How to use AI responsibly in the workplace | Self-directed, bitesize | £51.50 exc. VAT; free for members |
| DataCamp Teams, teams of 2 and up | Self-paced, per user | £23 per user a month, billed annually; no VAT wording |
| Coursera for Business, Team plan, up to 499 users | Per user, per year | £295.18, shown with taxes included |
| Coursera Plus | Per subscriber | £43 a month or £296 a year; no VAT wording |
Udemy Business prices its Team Plan per user per year for 2 to 50 people. The currency on that page changed between loads from the same UK connection, so no figure appears here.
Public courses, per place
Typically about £1,000 to £1,200 a place, reaching £2,500 for a 32-hour course in London.
| Provider and product | Length | Price as displayed |
|---|---|---|
| iO-Sphere, Data & AI Essentials short course | Six weeks, 24 live hours, evenings | £995 + VAT |
| CIPD, Introduction to AI for HR | Two consecutive days, virtual class | £1,035.00 exc. VAT; 15% off for members |
| iO-Sphere, AI Automation with n8n | Five evenings, 12.5 live hours | £1,195 + VAT |
| iO-Sphere, AI Strategy for Leaders | Five Friday afternoons, 10 live hours | £1,195 + VAT |
| General Assembly, AI Workplace Fundamentals | 32 hours, London | £2,500; no VAT wording |
QA's public course pages ask buyers to get in touch for pricing. On our three courses the price per seat is the same whether you book one seat or several, and a team can split its people across them. Price tells you nothing about content; what good AI training for non-technical staff covers is the other half of that choice.
University executive education
Typically £1,700 to £2,450 for six weeks online, and £6,250 + VAT to £6,950 for four or five days on campus.
| Provider and product | Length | Price as displayed |
|---|---|---|
| Imperial, AI for Business Transformation | 6 weeks, online | £1,700; no VAT wording |
| LSE, The AI-Ready Organisation | 6 weeks online, 5 to 7 hours a week | £2,420; no VAT wording |
| Oxford Artificial Intelligence Programme | 6 weeks (excluding orientation) online, 7 to 10 hours a week | £2,450; no VAT wording |
| Imperial, Professional Certificate in Machine Learning and AI | 25 weeks, online | £4,199; no VAT wording |
| Cambridge Judge, Generative Artificial Intelligence: From Hype to Business Impact | 4 days, face to face | £6,250 + VAT |
| Imperial, Transforming Business with AI | 5 days in person, South Kensington | £6,950; no VAT wording |
The Oxford price comes from the programme page run with delivery partner GetSmarter. Cambridge Judge charges VAT at the prevailing rate, which it gives as currently 20%, and its fee includes instruction, materials, lunch and breaks.
In-house, per group
Typically £1,000 to £1,500 for one session with one group, rising to £12,000 for a two-day department intensive. The cost per head falls with every extra person in the room, up to the provider's limit.
| Provider and product | Length | Price as displayed |
|---|---|---|
| Elansio, Demystify Workshop | Half day on site, up to 20 people | £980 + VAT |
| Elansio, Build Day | Six hours, after the Workshop | £1,395 + VAT |
| LogicRoad, Team Session | One session, in person | £1,450 ex VAT |
| We Call Shotgun, executive briefing | Half day, up to 15 attendees | From £3,500, net of VAT |
| We Call Shotgun, department intensive | Two days, up to 20 attendees | From £12,000, net of VAT |
LogicRoad delivers in person "with travel included anywhere in the UK". Our own team training is priced per engagement.
Funded routes
Typically nothing to £187.50 a unit (our sum, before any VAT) for the AI leadership apprenticeship units, where the provider charges no more than the £750 funding rate, and a share of the price for a Skills Bootcamp. Who pays what is in the funding section below.
| Route | Length | Employer's cost |
|---|---|---|
| AI leadership apprenticeship units, Level 5 | At least 30 hours each | £0 or £187.50 a unit for the employers described below, within £750 funding |
| Skills Bootcamps for existing staff | Commissioned locally | 10% or 30% under DfE's 2025 guide; set locally from 2026-27 |
What an hour of live teaching buys
A headline price says little about how much live teaching it buys. Dividing each price by the live hours its provider publishes gives a rougher but fairer comparison. No provider prints these figures, and where one gives days without hours, the length of day assumed is stated.
| Course and price | Live hours | Works out at, per live hour |
|---|---|---|
| iO-Sphere, Data & AI Essentials short course, £995 + VAT | 24 | £41.46 ex VAT |
| iO-Sphere, AI Automation with n8n, £1,195 + VAT | 12.5 | £95.60 ex VAT |
| iO-Sphere, AI Strategy for Leaders, £1,195 + VAT | 10 | £119.50 ex VAT |
| General Assembly, AI Workplace Fundamentals, £2,500 | 32 | £78.13, no VAT wording |
| Cambridge Judge, four days, £6,250 + VAT | 28, at 7 hours a day | £223.21 ex VAT |
At 8 hours a day Cambridge works out at £195.31 an hour and at 6 hours £260.42; per day, which needs no assumption, it is £1,562.50 ex VAT. Because its fee includes lunch and breaks, the teaching hours are fewer than the elapsed day. General Assembly states no VAT basis, so its row cannot be set like for like against the others.
The cost that is not on the invoice
The Employer Skills Survey 2024 asked a follow-up sample of 5,935 UK employers (fieldwork July 2024 to February 2025) what their training cost. Of the £53.0bn it put on UK employers' training spend in 2024, the wages of staff while they trained made up 49%. Fees to external providers were £3.8bn, about 7%.
Time was a named barrier to AI training as well: in a DSIT survey of employers outside the public sector, with fieldwork in spring 2024, 47% named lack of time as a barrier.
To cost that time, start from the ONS earnings survey for 2025. Median hourly pay for full-time employees, excluding overtime, was £19.67 in April 2025, a provisional figure. At that rate a 7.5-hour training day costs about £148 in salary, and ten working hours about £197.
Salary is the floor. HM Treasury's Green Book, the guidance for public-sector appraisal, costs staff time at salary plus pension, National Insurance, allowances and benefits. Your hourly figure sits above £19.67 by whatever your on-costs add, and moves with what the people you send earn.
When a course runs decides whose time pays for it. AI Strategy for Leaders meets on Friday afternoons, so its ten hours come out of the working week, about £197 of salary behind a £1,195 + VAT fee.
The Data & AI Essentials short course meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8pm, and AI Automation with n8n on Tuesday evenings. Their hours take none of the employer's working time; they take the learner's own evenings. In working time, the short course's 24 hours would cost about £472 at the median rate.
What public money pays
Skills England approved three Level 5 AI leadership apprenticeship units on 21 April 2026, open for delivery from 28 April: AI strategy and opportunity, AI adoption, procurement and governance, and AI delivery and organisational transformation. Each needs at least 30 hours and carries up to £750 of funding.
Under the unit funding rules for August 2026 to July 2027, the learner must be 19 or older. An employer that pays no levy (the charge falls on pay bills over £3 million) pays nothing up to the £750 funding rate, and so does a levy payer with insufficient funds, where the learner is aged 19 to 24.
For a learner aged 25 or over at a levy payer whose funds are spent, the government funds 75%, leaving the employer £187.50 a unit, on which VAT may be charged. Anything a provider charges above £750 falls to the employer in every case. The wider 2026 funding changes have their own guide.
Skills Bootcamps take existing staff too. Under DfE's technical funding guide, updated May 2025, the employer paid 10% of the price with fewer than 250 employees and 30% at 250 or more. From 2026-27 DWP funded devolved mayoral strategic authorities directly (allocations, June 2026), so rates are set locally: check your area.
For a longer funded route, the AI Transformation apprenticeship (Level 4) and the Data & AI Essentials apprenticeship (Level 3) are on our apprenticeships page; how the levy pays for AI training and the fully funded options for non-technical staff are covered separately.
Putting a figure in the budget
Suppose sixteen staff and their two managers. The staff each start with a free AI Skills Boost course, then take Elansio's half-day Demystify Workshop together on site: £980 + VAT for up to 20 people, which works out at about £61 a head for sixteen.
Elansio describes the workshop as a half day. Taking that as 3.75 hours, half of the 7.5-hour day used above (our assumption, not Elansio's figure), each person's time costs about £74 in salary, about £1,180 for the room. On that assumption the time costs more than the £980 fee before VAT; at three hours it would be about £944, a little less.
The two managers take AI Strategy for Leaders at £1,195 + VAT each, £2,390 + VAT for the pair, plus about £197 each of Friday-afternoon working time.
The budget line comes to about £3,370 + VAT in fees and about £1,570 of salary before on-costs, not counting the time the free courses take (20 minutes to a day each). Here the fees are the larger line; the more of a course that runs in working hours, the more the time weighs.
Decide before you spend it how you will measure whether the training worked. Change any rung and the same two lines still do the work: the fee from the tables, and the working hours at your own rate plus on-costs.
Frequently asked questions
Is VAT charged on AI training?
Providers show VAT in different ways, so check the basis on each price before you add them up. We, Cambridge Judge and Elansio show prices plus VAT; CIPD, LogicRoad and We Call Shotgun show them excluding it; many others show no VAT wording, which does not tell you either way. On apprenticeship units the funding price excludes VAT, though VAT may be charged on the employer's share.
What if a provider does not publish a price?
Ask for the price per person and the live hours, so the quote can sit beside the figures here. Some that quote say what it turns on: LogicRoad prices its multi-team programme by number of teams, Elansio its 90-Day Programme by scope, and We Call Shotgun quotes a multi-site rollout on scope, typically £80,000 to £250,000 net of VAT for 500 to 5,000 employees.
Do AI certificates cost extra?
Yes, where the exam is charged separately from the course. BCS charges per exam: £125 excl. VAT for the Essentials Certificate in Artificial Intelligence, with an optional remote proctor fee of £35 excl. VAT, and £165 excl. VAT for the Foundation Certificate, according to its professional certifications price list of April 2026.
