Alternatives to Multiverse: UK Data Apprenticeships

Almost every "alternatives to Multiverse" article does the same thing: lists eight provider names and stops. That's not a comparison: it's a directory. It leaves you no better placed to choose, because the providers all fund through the same Skills England standards and all say the same words about being practical and real-world.
Here's the more useful frame. Data apprenticeship providers barely differ on what they teach: a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship is a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship whoever delivers it. They differ enormously on how. Some teach theory first through lectures and academic partnerships; some coach you through real work in your actual job. That single distinction, learn-by-doing versus theory-first delivery, is what separates a capable data professional from a certificate holder.
It is the sharpest of the questions this page is built around, and the one the directory-style lists never ask. It comes second, though, because a provider's shape decides which of them can serve you at all.

What people mean by "alternatives to Multiverse" for data apprenticeships
Most people searching this have hit Multiverse first, usually through an advert or a recruiter's shortlist, and want to see who else runs comparable data apprenticeships in England before they commit. The honest answer: there's a healthy field, and Multiverse is one option among many, not the default.
Where Multiverse stands right now
Ofsted inspected Multiverse in February 2026 and graded it "needs attention" on leadership, apprenticeship achievement, curriculum and participation (FE Week, 21 May 2026). On Ofsted's current scale that is the second-lowest of five grades, which run "urgent improvement", "needs attention", "expected standard", "strong standard", "exceptional" (Ofsted). Ratings from the old four-point framework do not read across to it, by Ofsted's own statement, so an older "Good" or "Outstanding" from any provider is not a comparable fact and you should not treat it as one.
And since this page asks you to check everyone, that includes us: Ofsted has not yet published a report on iO-Sphere (checked 8 August 2026). There is no grade to weigh in either direction, and the same is true of our DfE rate below.
The outcome data is the more useful signal, and all of it is public. Nationally, apprenticeship achievement rose to 65.4% in 2024-25 from 60.5% the year before (DfE, March 2026). Multiverse's overall rate went the other way, falling to 52.6% from 59%.
On the Level 4 Data Analyst standard, which is the one most people reading this page are actually weighing up, the national achievement rate was 58.2% across 5,620 leavers. Here is that standard for every provider this page names, plus any other provider with 200 or more leavers on it:

Rates built on very small cohorts, which here means BPP, NowSkills and Kaplan, move a long way from year to year, so weigh them accordingly.
Two things in that table are worth sitting with. Multiverse is the largest provider of this standard in England by a wide margin, running close to half of all leavers in the country, and it still finishes 8.1 points below the national average. Since it makes up so much of that average, everyone else has to sit some way above it.
The second is the more useful one, and the national row is what makes it visible. Multiverse's pass rate, 98.5%, is slightly above the national 98.3%. Its retention, 50.9%, is 8.3 points below the national 59.2%. So Multiverse is not worse than the field at getting people through the end-point assessment. It is worse at keeping them long enough to sit it: roughly half the people who start never reach assessment at all. Those two failures have different causes and different fixes, and only one of them is visible in the headline achievement rate. If you are putting ten people onto a programme, retention is the number to ask about.
Multiverse also agreed with officials to pause new starts on its weakest-performing standards, including the leadership standards and the business analyst standard, and declined to give FE Week the full list of what was paused.
None of that strikes anyone off a shortlist by itself. It is a reason to do what this page argues throughout: pull every shortlisted provider's published outcomes from the DfE tables and weigh them yourself, on the specific standard you are buying rather than on the provider's overall average.
We are not in that table. Our own register entry does not yet show a published achievement rate, because our cohorts are recent, and the cohorts are recent because the line itself is: built after the AI shift, from the ground up. That is a different kind of fact from a published rate that came out badly, and it should not be read as the same thing: it means there is nothing to check yet, not that there is something being kept back.
So here is the commitment, since a page that asks you to check everyone else should be checkable itself: our cohorts will appear in this same DfE table when they complete, on the same basis as every provider above, and you should hold us to that rather than take our word for anything in the meantime. What you can check today is who coaches and what learners actually build. Ask us, and put the same question to everyone else on your list.
The main UK providers you'll compare are BPP, QA Apprenticeships, Corndel, Cambridge Spark, Decoded, TESS Group, NowSkills, Kaplan and iO-Sphere. They cluster around the same standards: most run the Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship (Data analyst, level 4, as listed on the government's Find apprenticeship training service), with some adding Level 3 Data Technician, Level 5 Data Engineer, and in a few cases a Level 6 Data Scientist degree apprenticeship. What varies is delivery, coaching and support, and that is exactly where a shortlist should focus.
How to evaluate a UK data apprenticeship provider
Before the criteria, the split that does most of the work: this field divides into shapes long before it divides into names.
On one side are scale generalists, who run apprenticeships across many disciplines at once, with the account machinery to match. Multiverse, QA, BPP and Kaplan sit here, and if you are rolling out across several functions and want one supplier, one contract and one dashboard, that shape is a genuine advantage rather than a compromise.
On the other are data and AI specialists, who run a narrow portfolio deeply. Cambridge Spark, Corndel, Decoded, NowSkills and iO-Sphere sit here. We are a specialist, and we would rather say that plainly than pretend the choice has no trade-off in it. Choose a specialist when the capability you need is deep data practice; choose a generalist when breadth and buying convenience matter more than depth in one discipline.
Then judge on four criteria, in this order: the delivery model, who does the coaching, whether the provider flexes to your size, and the standard covered. Everything else, brand, marketing gloss, a familiar logo, is noise on top of these. Funding, which most shortlists lead on, is deliberately absent: it is roughly equal across the field and treated separately below.
Delivery model. Does the apprentice learn by doing real work with support, or by sitting through theory first and applying it later? This is the single biggest differentiator, and it's the one providers describe most vaguely. Off-the-job training must happen within paid working hours as protected learning time (that's a funding rule, not a nicety), so the model that turns those hours into applied practice on live problems beats the model that fills them with lectures.
Who coaches. Ask whether the people guiding apprentices have done the job or studied the subject. Our view is blunt: capability comes from doing the work alongside someone who has already done it, rather than from being lectured at. Some providers lean on university partnerships and masterclasses: that's a legitimate model, but it's a different one, and you should choose it knowingly rather than by default.
Whether they flex to your size. This is the criterion shortlists skip, and it is the one that decides whether the programme happens at all. Ask it in the form that actually matters: if I have two people, what happens to them? An enterprise-first provider is built around volume, so a first cohort of two or three is either declined outright or run through machinery designed for fifty.
Our own answer, so you can put the same question to everyone else on your list: two people join an open cohort alongside learners from other companies and industries. A closed cohort built solely around your business is where we look for 10 to 12.
For a small team the open cohort is usually the better of the two, not the consolation prize. Our cohorts run on professional discussion and peer challenge rather than self-study, so the lone analyst in a company with no other data people gets the thing their own workplace cannot give them: a room of people doing the same job elsewhere, and the practice that travels between them. A closed cohort trades that away for context specific to your business. Both are real choices, and neither is a discount version of the other.
The standard covered. Match the standard to the role. One standard covers many job titles: you check a role against the standard's knowledge, skills and behaviours, not against its title. A person whose title never says "data analyst" can still be a perfect fit for ST0118 if their actual work is analysis. Far more people qualify than assume they do.
Do all these providers cover the same apprenticeship standards?
Broadly, yes, and that's the point. The market clusters on the Data Analyst standard (ST0118, Level 4), with Data Technician (ST0795, Level 3) and Data Engineer (ST1386, Level 5) common at the levels either side. A Level 6 Data Scientist degree apprenticeship exists too, delivered by some providers. Because the standard is fixed by Skills England, two providers running ST0118 are teaching to the same outcomes. So the standard tells you the destination, and the delivery model tells you whether the apprentice will actually arrive capable.
Leading Multiverse alternatives compared
Here's how the main providers position themselves, drawn from each one's own live programme page, with a line on who each one fits. That last part is the bit the directory lists leave out, and it is the only part that changes your decision. Treat provider-published figures (durations, prices, achievement rates) as each provider's current claim, not settled fact: they move, so re-check before you commit. These are fit judgements from public information, not quality rankings: the DfE table above is the ranking, and it is theirs, not ours.
BPP runs a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship covering advanced analysis, visualisation and data storytelling with tools such as Power BI, SQL and Python, delivered flexibly online-live or face-to-face; BPP describes it as a 16 to 21 month programme at the £15,000 levy band, or 95% government-funded for non-levy payers (BPP). BPP also lists related routes at other levels: a Level 3 Data Foundations apprenticeship, a Level 5 Data Engineer apprenticeship and a Data Scientist degree apprenticeship (BPP).
Fits when you already buy professional qualifications from BPP across other functions and want data on the same contract. On this specific standard it is a small operation: 110 leavers in 2024-25, so ask what a cohort of your size actually looks like.
QA Apprenticeships positions itself as a leading provider of funded Level 4 Data Analyst and Level 5 Data Engineer programmes, alongside Level 3 Data Essentials, a Databricks Engineer route and Business Analyst Level 4 (QA). QA also states that all its apprentices receive Microsoft Copilot training as standard, built into the programme (QA): a useful signal that AI fluency is becoming table stakes for data roles.
Fits when you want breadth across digital and IT alongside data. On the numbers it is the strongest of every provider with 200 or more leavers on this standard: 70.6% across 770, second only to Multiverse on size. Eleven smaller providers post a higher rate, all on cohorts of 110 leavers or fewer, which is too few to separate a track record from a good year.
Corndel delivers a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship in partnership with Imperial College Executive Education and supported by Microsoft, which Corndel describes as 16 months plus a 3-month assessment period, built on one-to-one coaching, hands-on "flipped learning" and 17 live Imperial Masterclasses per year with academics and industry experts (Corndel).
Corndel publishes a 67.1% achievement rate and states it is 9% above the national average (Corndel). The rate is verifiable: DfE records Corndel at 67.1% on the Level 4 Data Analyst standard in 2024-25, against a national 58.2% on the same standard, so the gap is 8.9 percentage points.
Corndel's academic-partnership model is a genuine, considered choice; just know that you're choosing a delivery model built around masterclasses and coaching layered on top, not around doing the job as the primary route to capability.
Fits when an academic name on the certificate carries weight with your stakeholders and your learners have the time to attend masterclasses on top of the job.
TESS Group offers a 12-month Level 3 Data Technician apprenticeship on ST0795, covering SQL, Excel, Power BI and AI tools across eight modules, and bundles three qualifications (the apprenticeship certificate plus an NCFE Level 3 Certificate in Data and NCFE Level 3 AI Prompt Engineering) within the £13,000 funding band (TESS Group, 2026-05-21). Its model is nationwide blended learning combining online modules, live trainer sessions and workplace projects, with a stated progression path from Level 3 into Level 4 Data Analyst (TESS Group, 2026-05-21).
Fits when your people are earlier than Level 4 and the bundled Level 3 certificates are useful to them. Note it does not appear in the 2024-25 achievement table for the Level 4 standard, so there is no outcome figure to check on that route.
NowSkills runs a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship ("Data Analyst with Power BI & Python") that it describes as a 20-month programme at the £15,000 band, combining 1:1 in-person and online delivery, live virtual classrooms and 24/7 on-demand resources, with masterclass modules on Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL and Python (NowSkills, 2026-06-15). Its curriculum lists dedicated modules including embedding a data culture, Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL and Python for Data Analysts (NowSkills, 2026-06-15).
Fits when you want a small provider with heavy 1:1 contact. Its 63.6% comes from only 20 leavers, which is too few to read as a track record either way.
Kaplan offers a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship it describes as up to 18 months including assessment, covering Excel, SQL, Tableau, Power BI, Python and R across a structured milestone journey (Kaplan). Kaplan's support model includes a named client-solutions contact, sector-expert tutors, an ePortfolio for real-time tracking and 1:1s with an industry-experienced Talent Coach (Kaplan).
Fits when you are already a Kaplan client on the finance and accountancy side. On this standard its 2024-25 cohort was 30 leavers, and both its retention and its pass rate sit below the national figures, so ask for the current year before you commit a team.
Decoded runs a "Data Analyst L4 Apprenticeship" it describes as 15 months excluding end-point assessment, delivered as blended learning across four topics with at least 6 hours a week of off-the-job learning, covering Python, SQL, data visualisation and predictive analytics, with the curriculum adaptable to your organisation's own data tools (Decoded, 2026-08-08). It pitches the programme at people already responsible for producing analysis and reports for others.
Fits when your people are already doing analytical work and you want the curriculum adapted to your own tools. On the numbers, its 53.9% across 210 leavers sits below the national 58.2%, with retention and pass rate both below the national figures too, so ask for the current year's picture before you commit a team.
Cambridge Spark is frequently named in this bracket as a technical data and AI apprenticeship provider. We didn't have a verified current source for its live offer at the time of writing, so treat it as a name to shortlist and check on its own site rather than one to compare on specifics here. On the numbers it is a serious contender: 69.1% across 530 leavers, second only to QA among the providers with 200 or more leavers on this standard.
Fits when you want a data and AI specialist with a measured record rather than a broad portfolio.
The pattern across all of them: near-identical standards and tool lists, with the real variation in how learning happens and who guides it. That's your decision axis.
Where iO-Sphere fits: learn-by-doing, not academic delivery
iO-Sphere is a UK data and AI training provider built on one belief: capability is built in the doing, guided by practitioners rather than academics. That's the position, and it's why we belong on this shortlist for reasons other than "another name".
We deliver a Level 4 data analyst apprenticeship on ST0118, a Level 5 data engineering apprenticeship on ST1386, and an AI transformation apprenticeship that runs on the Business Analyst standard (ST0117) for teams putting AI to work. Our apprenticeship programmes run 15 months of training plus a 3-month end-point assessment. It's worth comparing this directly against the durations providers publish above, because the number that matters is when someone becomes capable, not how long the standard's typical duration runs.
Three things make the delivery genuinely different. First, our coaches are practitioners who've done the work in industry, not lecturers teaching a subject. Second, learners work in Prism, a simulated e-commerce company built on 500M+ rows of real data, so they practise on real data problems in a safe sandbox before and alongside applying it in their own role. Real data, simulated company: the sandbox is the safety. Third, the programmes were built after the AI shift, with AI integrated from the ground up: there is no pre-AI curriculum underneath them.
On assessment, this matters more than most shortlists notice. Apprenticeships are assessed on your real work: a portfolio and project review plus a professional discussion, set by the standard's assessment plan, with a knowledge test present only where that specific plan mandates one. If exam halls are the part that puts you off, that holds across the whole field, not just here.
One caveat that also holds across the field: under the 2025-26 reforms the government is moving from end-point assessment to a model that allows assessment throughout the apprenticeship, so check the current shape for your start date, whichever provider you choose.
Who iO-Sphere is not for
If you need a Level 6 or Level 7 apprenticeship, a data scientist degree apprenticeship, say, we don't deliver at that level, and we'd point you to the government's Find apprenticeship training service, which lists every provider approved to deliver a given standard. Our Level 4 and Level 5 programmes are a strong foundation and progression route toward those levels, but they aren't equivalent to them, and we won't pretend otherwise.
Likewise, if your team needs broad AI fluency in weeks rather than a role-length apprenticeship, a short course serves you better than any apprenticeship: pick the format by what your people will practise on, not by the biggest available funding pot.
Funding and eligibility: levy, transfers and approved standards
Data apprenticeships in England are funded through the Growth & Skills Levy (formerly the Apprenticeship Levy), and any start you plan now lands in the 2026-27 funding year (starts from 1 August 2026). Apprenticeship policy and funding moved to the Department for Work and Pensions on 16 September 2025, and ownership of the funding-rules guidance itself followed on 1 April 2026 (gov.uk); apprenticeship standards are approved by Skills England, which replaced the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education in June 2025.
What your organisation actually pays, for a start from 1 August 2026. Age decides more of this than levy status does, which is the reverse of what most employers assume:
- An apprentice aged 16 to 24 at the start costs you £0, whoever you are. Levy payer, non-levy employer, or a levy payer whose pot has run dry: all £0 under the 2026-27 rules (v3, amended 29 July 2026). The 25% co-investment figure you will find in older guides no longer applies to this age group at all.
- Aged 25 or over, it depends on your levy status. A levy payer spends from its apprenticeship service account, and pays 25% of the remaining cost if those funds run short. A non-levy employer (pay bill under £3 million: it is a pay-bill test, never a headcount) pays 5% of the funding band.
- Levy transfer: a larger employer can gift up to 50% of its unused funds (raised from 25% in April 2024), often covering 100% of an SME's training cost, again £0 to you.
The Data Analyst standard (ST0118) sits in the £15,000 funding band. The money largely covers the training whichever provider you choose. Use the value to remove the cost worry, but don't let it pick the provider: every reputable provider funds through the same rules. For the mechanics in full, see our funding options explainer. One thing to steer clear of: short apprenticeship "units" (live from 28 April 2026) are fundable through the levy but confer no regulated qualification and are capped in depth. In our view they suit an employer who needs a narrow, fully-funded, short intervention and can't fund more. They're not a route to real capability. A full apprenticeship is.
How to shortlist the right provider
Shortlist in three moves rather than by name recognition. First, fix the standard and level against the actual work: check the role's knowledge, skills and behaviours, not its job title, because one standard covers many titles. Second, interrogate delivery and coaching: ask each provider, plainly, "who coaches, and have they done this job?" and "what does an apprentice actually do in their off-the-job hours?" Third, confirm the funding is clean and the standard is Skills England-approved. Then set funding aside, because it's roughly equal across the field.
The provider that wins is the one whose delivery model makes your people capable, not the one with the most familiar advert.
