Alternatives to Multiverse: UK Data & AI Apprenticeships

You came here for alternatives to Multiverse. The test that matters for any of them is whether the programme actually turns your people into capable analysts and engineers, and Multiverse's own published record is the clearest place to see what decides that.
What Multiverse's record shows
Ofsted inspected Multiverse in February 2026 and graded it "needs attention" on leadership, achievement, curriculum and participation (FE Week, 21 May 2026). On its five-grade scale, running from "urgent improvement" up through "needs attention", "expected standard", "strong standard" and "exceptional", that is one above the bottom (Ofsted). The provider also agreed to pause new starts on some of its weakest apprenticeships, including leadership and business analyst, and did not give FE Week the full list.
The deeper signal is in the numbers on its flagship, the Level 4 Data Analyst standard, where Multiverse is by far the largest provider: 2,770 leavers in 2024-25 (people who finished or left that year), close to half the national total.
Its 50.1% achievement rate is two numbers multiplied: how many people stay to the end, and how many of those pass. Multiverse's pass rate is 98.5%, just above the national 98.3%, so the exam is not the problem. Its retention is 50.9%, against a national 59.2%: about half of those who start leave before they are ever assessed. People do not leave an apprenticeship because a final exam is hard. They leave when the day-to-day is not working.
So choose on how the programme is run
Two providers running the identical Level 4 Data Analyst standard can send you a capable analyst on one side and a certificate-holder who cannot yet do the work on the other. The difference is how the year was spent, and it comes down to two things a brand and a level number will not tell you: who coaches the apprentice, and what they spend their protected training hours on.
Providers sit at opposite ends of both. At one end, capability is built through teaching: expert trainers and academics deliver the subject in masterclasses and structured modules, and the apprentice applies it to the job afterwards. The university-partnered model is the clearest version, and a genuine, well-regarded one, with Corndel's Imperial College partnership among the strongest examples.
At the other end, capability is built through the work itself: the coaching comes from people who have done the analyst's or engineer's job, and the protected hours go on real problems from the apprentice's own role, with the theory arriving as the work demands it.
Both can produce a good analyst. The difference is that the second lets you watch an apprentice get better at the actual job from the first month, instead of waiting for a taught course to be applied. That is the bet iO-Sphere makes.
iO-Sphere is built around exactly that
iO-Sphere is a UK data and AI training provider built on one idea: capability comes from doing the work, coached by people who have done it. Two things follow, and they are the two the record says matter.
The first is who coaches. Our coaches did the analyst's or engineer's job in industry before they taught it, so the parts of the craft that are hard to teach from a textbook, cleaning messy production data, handling a stakeholder's half-formed request under time pressure, come from someone who has done exactly that.
The second is what apprentices work on. The protected off-the-job hours, the training time every apprenticeship sets aside away from normal duties, go on real problems from the apprentice's own role, coached, rather than on generic tutorial datasets. Where the role has not yet thrown up a particular challenge, we use realistic case studies and simulations built to stand in for it, so an apprentice still meets the situations the job will demand. And because we built the line after the shift to AI, AI is part of the work from the start, not a module bolted on.
Two more things a team feels quickly. We flex on cohort size where an enterprise-first provider often cannot: one or two people from an SME can join an open cohort alongside learners from other companies, with no minimum on your side, and a closed cohort built only around your business is where we look for 10 to 12 people. And each apprenticeship runs 15 months of training plus a 3-month end-point assessment, though the number that matters is when someone can do the job, not the length of the programme.
Which rung do you need?
Multiverse runs data and AI apprenticeships from a Level 3 technician route up to Level 6 degrees. iO-Sphere runs the alternative on four of those rungs; only the Level 6 degrees are outside what we deliver. Read from Multiverse's own programme pages in August 2026:

On the AI-at-work rung the contrast is at its sharpest. Multiverse agreed with officials to pause new starts on the Business Analyst standard (ST0117), one of its weakest performers (FE Week, 21 May 2026). That is the standard iO-Sphere delivers its AI Transformation apprenticeship on, for teams putting AI to work in a real business rather than building models. Multiverse's separate AI-and-automation apprenticeships continue at Level 4, but on the business analyst route it has stepped back from, we are taking starts.
For the Level 6 degree routes, which we do not run, the government's Find apprenticeship training service lists every approved provider for a given standard.
Check it against the record
None of this has to be taken on trust. On the Level 4 Data Analyst standard, the rung with the most providers and the most data, the Department for Education publishes every provider's record each year. Below is 2024-25 for every provider named on this page, plus any other with 200 or more leavers. The national row sits in the middle, so each rate reads against a baseline.

Level 4 Data Analyst (ST0118), 2024-25, all ages. Provider figures from the DfE achievement rates by provider dataset; the national figure from the DfE achievement rates by standard table. Rates built on very small cohorts, which here means BPP, NowSkills and Kaplan, move a long way from year to year, so weigh them accordingly.
QA holds the strongest record among the larger providers, 70.6% across 770 leavers; Corndel (67.1%, an Imperial College partnership) and Cambridge Spark (69.1%) also sit above the average, on smaller cohorts; BPP, Kaplan and NowSkills run volumes too small to read as a track record either way.
The one figure missing is ours. iO-Sphere is new, so we are not in the table yet, because our first cohorts have not reached assessment. When they do, our rate will appear here on the same basis as every provider. Today iO-Sphere is on the Apprenticeship Providers and Assessment Register (APAR) and open to Ofsted inspection like any provider.

What it costs, and why funding comes last
Funding barely separates these providers, because they all use the same rules, so it belongs last in the decision. Here is how it works for a start from 1 August 2026, when age decides more than levy status, which is the reverse of what most employers expect.
- An apprentice aged 16 to 24 at the start costs the employer £0, at every employer type, including a levy payer whose funds have run out. The 25% co-investment figure in older guides no longer applies to this age group.
- For an apprentice aged 25 or over it depends on levy status. A levy payer draws from its apprenticeship service account and pays 25% of any shortfall only if the pot runs short; a non-levy employer (a pay bill under £3 million, a pay-bill test, not a headcount) pays 5% of the funding band.
- A larger employer can transfer up to 50% of its unused levy funds (raised from 25% in April 2024), which often covers 100% of an SME's cost.
Funding bands run from £13,000 for the Level 3 route to £19,000 for the Level 5 Data Engineer standard, and the band largely covers the training whoever delivers it. Use the funding to take cost off the table, then choose on how the programme is run. Is Multiverse a good data apprenticeship provider?
It depends on what you are buying and how you read its record. Ofsted graded it "needs attention" in February 2026, and it paused new starts on some of its weakest apprenticeships. On the Level 4 Data Analyst standard its achievement rate sat below the national average, and the reason matters: about half its starters leave before assessment, so the shortfall is retention, not the exam. That does not rule it out; judge any provider on how it runs its programme and its published record for the standard you are buying.
Who are the main alternatives to Multiverse for data and AI apprenticeships in the UK?
It depends on the level, because the field changes at each. For the Level 4 Data Analyst standard the most-compared providers are QA, Corndel, Cambridge Spark, BPP, Decoded, NowSkills, Kaplan and iO-Sphere; the Level 5 Data Engineer and Level 3 Data Technician fields are smaller, and iO-Sphere is an alternative on all of them, plus the AI-at-work route. Because the standard is shared within a level, the comparison that pays off is on how each programme is delivered and who does the coaching.
Does iO-Sphere offer the same levels as Multiverse?
Most of them. Multiverse runs a ladder from a Level 3 data technician route to Level 6 degree apprenticeships. iO-Sphere runs the alternative on four of those rungs: Data & AI Essentials at Level 3, Advanced Data & AI at Level 4, Data Engineering at Level 5, and an AI Transformation apprenticeship for teams putting AI to work. How much does a data apprenticeship cost the employer?

The field is smaller than for the Level 4 Data Analyst standard, so a single year's published rate swings further; weigh each provider on who coaches and what apprentices build, and pull its record for ST1386 before you commit.
Who are the alternatives to Multiverse for a Level 3 data technician apprenticeship?
Multiverse runs a Level 3 route on the Data Technician standard (ST0795) as "Data and Insights with AI Fundamentals". iO-Sphere runs the same standard as its Data & AI Essentials apprenticeship, and providers such as TESS Group also offer it, with the full list on the government's Find apprenticeship training service. A Level 3 is a foundation and a step toward the Level 4 Data Analyst standard, so it is worth checking whether your people are ready to start at Level 4 first.
Does a data apprenticeship involve exams?
Usually not in the exam-hall sense. Apprenticeships are assessed mainly on the apprentice's real work, through a portfolio and project review plus a professional discussion, with the method set by each standard's assessment plan; a written knowledge test appears only where that plan calls for one. For anyone who dreads sitting a paper, demonstrating what you can actually do tends to be the more comfortable deal, and it holds whichever provider you choose.
