Google, BCS, IBM and others each offer an AI certificate open to people with no technical background. What it proves depends on the test behind it and who wrote that test.

The certificates side by side
The issuers' pages and prices below, and the register records later on, were read on 2 October 2026. Prices are shown as each issuer displays them, so currencies and VAT bases differ, and the table is ordered by issuer, not ranked.
| Certificate and issuer | How it is assessed, and how long | Price as displayed, and expiry |
|---|---|---|
| AWS Certified AI Practitioner (AWS) | Exam at a test centre or online under a proctor, 65 questions in 90 minutes | 100 USD plus any applicable tax; valid for 3 years |
| BCS Essentials Certificate in Artificial Intelligence (BCS) | Closed-book exam, 20 multiple-choice questions in 30 minutes, pass mark 65% | £160 exam only, including £35 remote proctoring, plus VAT; page says nothing about expiry |
| BCS Foundation Certificate in Artificial Intelligence (BCS) | Closed-book exam, 40 multiple-choice questions in one hour, pass mark 65% | £200 exam only, including £35 remote proctoring, plus VAT; page says nothing about expiry |
| Introduction to AI for HR (CIPD) | Two days of online classes and self-directed learning; certificate at the end; the page names no exam | £1,035 exc. VAT; page says nothing about expiry |
| How to use AI responsibly in the workplace (CIPD) | 60 to 90 minutes online; a knowledge check that is "not a formal assessment"; the page mentions no certificate | £51.50 exc. VAT; page says nothing about expiry |
| AI Fundamentals Certification (DataCamp) | Timed exam of 30 questions, 45 minutes (the page also says up to one hour); AI Fundamentals track about 9 hours | Included in Premium, shown as "$25 per month"; does not expire |
| AI For Everyone (DeepLearning.AI, on Coursera) | Four quizzes, one per weekly module; 7 hours | Certificate requires paid enrolment; no price shown; page says nothing about expiry |
| Google AI Essentials (Google, on Coursera) | Graded assessments within the courses; the page header gives 4 hours to complete | $49 a month in the US and Canada; no sterling price shown; page says nothing about expiry |
| AI Foundations for Everyone (IBM, on Coursera) | Four courses; header gives 4 weeks at 10 hours a week | Cannot be taken free; no price shown; page says nothing about expiry |
| Artificial Intelligence Fundamentals badge (IBM SkillsBuild) | Graded quizzes, final assessments and practice simulations | Free; page says nothing about expiry |
| Azure AI Fundamentals (Microsoft) | Proctored exam AI-901, passing score 700; page now asks for Python knowledge and lists the job role AI Engineer | £64, taxes not included; does not expire |
What the assessment column tells you
Several certificates rest on graded work inside a course. Google AI Essentials on Coursera gives buyers "videos, activities, readings, and graded assessments" across five courses and names no proctored exam; its page says "You don't need any technical experience to begin." AI For Everyone, taught by Andrew Ng, sets a quiz each week, the first listed at 30 minutes.
IBM's free SkillsBuild badge asks learners to pass "the graded quizzes and final assessments and complete the practice simulations". In the Google, DeepLearning.AI and SkillsBuild cases the checks sit inside the course. IBM's Coursera specialization says it "does not require any programming skills".
In a timed exam the issuer sets the paper and controls the conditions. The BCS Foundation Certificate is a one-hour closed-book paper, passed at 26 out of 40, listed for roles including "organisational change practitioners" and "business strategists and consultants". The Essentials Certificate is 30 minutes, passed at 13 out of 20, and names middle and "senior managers running or assembling teams to create AI dependent applications and services" among its audience.
The AWS Certified AI Practitioner is taken at a Pearson VUE centre or online under a proctor. AWS writes that its ideal candidate "uses, but does not necessarily build AI/ML solutions on AWS", and that anyone "new to IT and AWS Cloud" should start with AWS Cloud Practitioner Essentials or AWS Technical Essentials.
DataCamp's AI Fundamentals Certification is "a single 30 question exam" with 45 minutes allowed, though the same page also says candidates get "up to one hour" once they start. A failed attempt can be retaken after 30 days. DataCamp's AI Fundamentals track states "no coding experience necessary".
CIPD's courses work differently. Introduction to AI for HR runs over two consecutive days for "early to mid-career HR professionals" and ends with a certificate; the page names no exam. The shorter course on using AI responsibly closes with "a brief knowledge check. This is not a formal assessment". What the training itself should contain is covered in our guide to AI adoption training.
Microsoft's certificate changed in June
The AI-900 exam page now carries this banner: "The AI-900 exam was retired on June 30, 2026, and has been replaced by AI-901. To earn this certification, candidates must now pass AI-901." The retired exam was "intended for you if you have both technical and non-technical backgrounds", and said data science and software engineering experience were not required.
The Azure AI Fundamentals certification page, updated in English on 15 April 2026, lists "Job role: AI Engineer" and says candidates "need knowledge of Python coding syntax and programming techniques". On the AI-901 exam page, "Implement AI solutions by using Microsoft Foundry" makes up 55 to 60 per cent of the exam.
What the price and expiry column tells you
Coursera displays its prices by the month. The Coursera page for Google AI Essentials says "In the U.S. and Canada, Coursera charges $49 per month after the initial 7-day free trial period. Prices may vary in other countries." Its header button reads "Enroll for free", while its FAQ answers "No, you cannot take this course for free."
Coursera's UK pricing shows a general range of £36 to £58 a month for individual courses and programmes, without saying which figure applies to any course here, and Coursera Plus at £43 a month or £295 a year. Under monthly billing, length matters, and the AI Essentials page's figures differ: its header says 4 hours to complete, while the five courses listed beneath it add up to 8 hours.
Two prices are in dollars only: Google's $49 and AWS's 100 USD plus any applicable tax. AWS's exam pricing page lists local prices in six other currencies, none of them sterling.
DataCamp's certification page shows "$25 per month", while its pricing page shows Premium at £36, struck through for "£2 first month", and Teams at £23 per user a month billed annually. DataCamp does not say whether the dollar and sterling figures are the same plan.
The exams priced in sterling run from Microsoft's £64 to BCS's £200, each shown before tax. Microsoft's figure carries the note "Pricing does not include applicable taxes"; BCS adds VAT at purchase. CIPD quotes its prices exc. VAT, and Coursera and DataCamp show no tax wording.
Only one certificate in the table states an expiry. AWS says the AI Practitioner "is valid for 3 years" and is renewed by passing the latest version of the exam or by earning the AWS Certified Machine Learning Engineer (Associate). Microsoft and DataCamp both say their Fundamentals certifications "do not expire". The BCS, Google, IBM, Coursera and CIPD pages say nothing about expiry.
For what AI training costs across every format, see our cost guide; funded routes have their own page.
Vendor certificate or regulated qualification
Ofqual "regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in England". Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland have their own regulators: Qualifications Wales, CCEA Regulation and SQA. The Register of Regulated Qualifications exists to "find out if a qualification is regulated (officially recognised)" and covers England and Northern Ireland.
To see what the register records, take one entry. The entry for NCFE's Level 2 Award in AI for the Workplace, number 610/7671/5, shows a Vocationally-Related Qualification at Level 2, 60 guided learning hours within 80 hours of total qualification time, assessed by portfolio of evidence, graded Pass/Fail, available to learners in England and internationally from 2 September 2026.
There are about 50 AI-titled qualifications offered in England besides apprenticeship assessments (Ofqual register, 2 October 2026). They include programming qualifications such as the TQUK Level 3 Certificate in AI Programming with Python. Prices are set by the centres that deliver them and do not appear on the register.
Besides the NCFE award, those aimed at the workplace include the NOCN Level 2 Award in AI Awareness and the SIAS Level 2 Award in Understanding Artificial Intelligence in Business. For managers, City & Guilds has a Level 5 Award in Responsible Leadership with Artificial Intelligence, and CMI has awards, certificates and diplomas at Levels 3, 5 and 7, which our guide to AI transformation courses compares.
None of the certificates in the table is on Ofqual's register. BCS states on the pages for both its AI certificates that each "is not regulated" by Ofqual, Qualifications Wales, CCEA Regulation or SQA. BCS itself is an Ofqual-recognised awarding organisation, with 48 qualifications on the register available to learners.
An apprenticeship's end-point assessment (the final assessment) is itself a regulated qualification on Ofqual's register. We have an interest here: iO-Sphere delivers two apprenticeships that non-technical staff take, AI Transformation (Level 4), on the standard the register titles Business Analyst, and Data & AI Essentials (Level 3), on the Data Technician standard.
Whether employers trust a credential is harder to measure. A report published by Skills England in October 2025, written by Dr Nisreen Ameen of Royal Holloway, University of London, drew on workshops held from March to May 2025. It recorded: "Without trusted credentials, shared skills frameworks, or benchmarked training outcomes, some employers dismissed even well-designed AI courses as vague or irrelevant."
The same report noted learners who "completed self-guided AI training online, only to find that it was not recognised by local employers or connected to further qualifications." We found no UK statistic measuring whether employers value AI certificates.
The AI foundations badge announced in January 2026
On 28 January 2026, DSIT, Skills England and Liz Kendall MP announced free courses on the AI Skills Hub, checked against Skills England's AI foundation skills for work benchmark. People completing selected courses were to receive what the announcement called "a government-backed virtual AI foundations badge". The six skills in that benchmark are set out in our AI literacy guide.
Which kind of certificate fits which need
A team that needs a shared baseline is weighing access and cost per head. The Google, DeepLearning.AI and DataCamp courses and IBM's Coursera specialization state that no technical or coding background is needed. The SkillsBuild badge is free, and the benchmarked AI Skills Hub courses were announced as free in January 2026. DataCamp lists a Teams price per user. For Google, DeepLearning.AI and the SkillsBuild badge, the checks are set inside the course.
An individual who needs something examined is weighing who sets the paper. BCS, AWS and DataCamp set timed exams with published question counts, BCS with remote proctoring and AWS at a test centre or online under a proctor, and Microsoft's proctored exam now expects Python.
An employer who needs a regulated qualification is looking at the register. That means an awarding body's qualification with its own number, level and assessment method, or an apprenticeship, whose end-point assessment is on the register too.
Frequently asked questions
Is Google's AI Professional Certificate the same as Google AI Essentials?
No. Google's European listing shows both: AI Essentials as "this 4 hour course" on prompting and daily tasks, and the AI Professional Certificate as an 8-hour course with "20+ hands-on activities". Google's UK page promotes the Professional Certificate, with "practical labs that mirror real tasks" and a portfolio of projects, and does not list AI Essentials.
Does AWS offer an AI certificate that is not about its own services?
Yes. AWS also lists the AWS Certified AI Business Strategist, which it says "validates business judgment for AI decisions" and "does not assess knowledge of AWS AI services".
Does BCS offer smaller AI awards?
Yes: the BCS AI Foundation Pathway has 13 awards across business innovation, data, ethics, and machine learning with other techniques. Four awards, one per area, make a Foundation Certificate in AI; eight, with at least one in each area, make a Foundation Diploma. Each award page lists £75 plus £35 for remote proctoring plus VAT, and states it is not regulated by Ofqual or the other UK regulators.
How much preparation do the BCS exams expect?
BCS says classroom courses normally last three days for the Foundation and one day for Essentials, and that preparing usually takes at least 60 hours and 40 hours respectively. It recommends training with a BCS accredited training provider, and course prices vary by provider and format. Our guide to choosing a training provider covers what to ask.
Do CIPD members pay less for its AI courses?
Yes. CIPD lists a 15% member discount on Introduction to AI for HR, and How to use AI responsibly in the workplace is free for members.
What did UK employers say they wanted from AI training?
In an Ipsos survey for DSIT of 801 UK employers, fieldwork 19 March to 7 June 2024, published January 2026, 50% cited being unsure what training was relevant, the most common barrier. Of the 344 interested in future training, 87% wanted training on keeping information safe and private, and 86% on communicating with AI systems and solving problems with AI.
