Half a day, a week, six weeks, five months or fifteen months: the length of an AI governance programme is the first measure of how much of a person's job it can prepare them to do.
AI Governance Training in London: From a Half Day to Fifteen Months, and How to Choose by Length

The ladder of programmes, shortest first
Each source states length on its own basis (CPD hours, clock hours, a self-study band, a weekly commitment or a typical duration), so each row names its basis; clock and timetabled hours in brackets are our sums from the timetables shown.
Apart from the two apprenticeship rows, two programmes stand out for length. LSE's AI: Law, Policy and Governance is the longest listed with governance in its title from a London institution: six weekly modules plus an orientation week, online. London Business School's Chief AI Officer Programme is the longest listed that is taught partly on a London campus: five months, eight days of them on campus, with an AI governance and ethics strand.
Where a row says "no VAT wording", the course page prints a price without saying whether VAT is included.

The rows with a London room are London Business School (the masterclass, and the Chief AI Officer Programme's two four-day campus immersions), Fordham (2 Eyre St Hill, EC1R 5ET, day one), NobleProg (its Barbican centre or your premises, on request), GOVISOGLOBAL (listed under London on PECB's calendar, no venue shown) and EuroMaTech (October 2027). The rest are online, virtual or on demand, or name no room.
The Chartered Governance Institute's series rate applies when all four modules are booked through its training team.
For a data protection lead, the nearest adjacent course is LSE's Data Protection Law and Governance: online, six weeks at 8 to 10 hours a week, £2,420 with no VAT wording, next starting 31 March 2027. Its title carries no AI.
What each length buys
The reading below is ours, applied to the rows above.
Hours buy the vocabulary. A half-day module or a self-paced course of three hours gives someone the words: enough to follow an AI item at the board, ask what a term means and recognise the regulatory landscape when it is named.
The Chartered Governance Institute built its modules for "governance professionals, company secretaries, board members, and senior leaders", people for whom AI is one agenda item among many.
For a director in that seat, one module and the questions a board should ask about AI are the right size of purchase.
Days buy the questions to ask. Two to five days is where the credentials sit: the AIGP, EC-Council's responsible AI governance credential, and ISO/IEC 42001 lead implementer and lead auditor.
King's names what its five days produce, including "an AI procurement questionnaire and risk-management documentation aligned with ISO and the NIST AI Risk Management Framework".
This is the rung for a person who will review vendors and systems. King's looks for participants with 2 to 5+ years of experience, in sectors such as finance, law, compliance and audit. Act Now's four days are tailored to people in information governance and data protection, and ask for some knowledge of the UK GDPR.
Six weeks buy the law. LSE's AI: Law, Policy and Governance covers "the five principles guiding AI regulation in the UK" and "the design requirements for high-risk AI systems", and asks for no prior legal or regulatory background.
It is written for in-house legal advisers, policy team managers overseeing AI governance and compliance staff, and ends in an LSE certificate of competence.
Months buy the chief AI officer's seat. London Business School asks for a minimum of ten years' experience and runs AI governance and ethics as one strand, beside cyber security and data governance.
Imperial's curriculum combines executive leadership, AI and data strategy, enterprise data architecture and governance. Both suit the person who will hold the whole AI agenda, so settle who owns AI governance in your organisation before buying one.
Fifteen months buy the daily job. The funded standard is written for people whose title already carries the work: its typical job titles include data protection lead, information compliance officer, information governance lead and privacy officer.
Training runs beside the job for more than a year, with at least 370 hours of off-the-job training.
The funded route from London
The fifteen-month rung is an apprenticeship standard, Skills England's published definition of an occupation. ST0967, the Data protection and information governance practitioner standard, is Level 4, version 2.0, open for starts from 9 September 2026 under a revised assessment plan. Skills England gives a typical duration of 18 months, not counting assessment, and a funding band, the cap on what funding covers, of £10,000.
Find Apprenticeship Training, the GOV.UK search service, shows ten training providers offering ST0967. With London entered as the learner's work location, nine list delivery at the learner's workplace; the tenth lists only day release, one day a week at its own location.
Eligibility turns on hours worked in England, and the city does not enter it. The apprenticeship funding rules for August 2026 to July 2027, issued by the Department for Work and Pensions, require at paragraph 30.5 that the apprentice "spends at least 50% of their working hours in England over the duration of the apprenticeship. This also applies to remote and hybrid workers."
Where the employer is registered and where the training happens are no part of that test, and Annex A of the rules lists the exceptions.
Since 1 August 2026 the hours no longer need to be known in advance: in exceptional cases, where an employer cannot confirm exact working locations at the start, a written employer statement that at least half the apprentice's working hours will be in England is the evidence.
Apprenticeship units carry the same 50% test under the apprenticeship unit funding rules for August 2026 to July 2027, which still require the hours to be regular, planned and known at the start (paragraph 22.5).
What an employer pays towards ST0967 turns on two things, neither of which a London address changes: the apprentice's age, and whether the employer's annual pay bill is over £3 million, which is what makes it a levy payer. The funding split sets the shares.
One exclusion matters for anyone weighing a London bootcamp first: a person on a government-funded Skills Bootcamp is not eligible for apprenticeship funding.
iO-Sphere is a London-based training provider at 102 Middlesex Street, London E1 7EZ, and an apprentice on our Data & AI Governance (Level 4) can still be anywhere in England, since its coaching sessions run online each week; it and Data & AI Strategy (Level 4) run on the same standard, ST0967.
What London's public bodies have found and funded
GLA Economics' summary of evidence for the Mayor's AI and Jobs Taskforce, July 2026, reports the GLA's Talk London survey (1,227 respondents aged 16 and over, 18 May to 21 June 2026, unweighted): 54% of employee respondents said they received guidance on their organisation's AI policy and 36% had formal training, with no count given of how many respondents were employees.
The Mayor's Skills Academies ran from March 2022 to March 2026 in five sectors, none of them AI, and the Skills Bootcamps for Londoners finder returns no results for "governance" among its 67 bootcamps. In a release of 21 July 2026 the Mayor committed "to expand AI training for Londoners" but named no course, provider, date or eligibility, so a London buyer of governance training is back at the ladder above.
The question to put to any London provider
Answer one question yourself first: how much of this person's job will the governance be? An AI item at a quarterly board is hours. Reviewing vendors and systems is days. Interpreting the law for the organisation is weeks. Holding the whole AI agenda is months.
Doing governance every day, under a title such as data protection lead or privacy officer, is the fifteen-month rung, where Data & AI Governance (Level 4) is the programme we teach. Then choose the format (a short course, a funded apprenticeship or a self-directed start), then the provider, and the venue last, since most of the dated options above are online.
Put your answer to any London provider before anything else, and ask which of its programmes is the rung that matches it.
Frequently asked questions
Can a disabled home worker outside England qualify for the funded route?
Paragraph 374.6, in Annex A of the funding rules, makes the exception: a learner resident in the UK who would meet the 50% England test, but whose employer has put in place a reasonable adjustment letting them work from home because of a disability, is excepted from the rule. For anyone else outside the test, the provider must make separate arrangements with the relevant devolved administration.
Has the IAPP run its AI governance training in London?
In February 2026, on the 23rd and 24th at its UK Intensive; its 2027 London event, 5 to 8 April at The Hilton London Metropole, has training days on 5 and 6 April, and its page names no AI Governance Professional session for them.
